A quick way to improve our writing doesn’t involve writing at all; it’s all about listening. I’m one of those writers who reads my work aloud as I write, so I can listen to the sound of the sentences. Do they flow, is anything jarring or jagged, do I hear any missing or rough transitions?
@SusanOrlean recommends this practice to quickly improve our writing: “The best thing you can do, to improve your writing, is to read it aloud while you’re working on it. It feels weird and awkward, but it’s the single best way to tell if something sounds natural and makes sense, and, even more importantly, sounds like you.”
